Nature conservation action Hainburger Au

A large power plant was to be built on the Danube east of Vienna, near Hainburg, using a dry construction method, with a direct loss of 7 km² of floodplain forest. There was a civil war-like uprising and occupation of the Hainburger Au by activists. Hundertwasser supported the protest and camped with the occupiers in the floodplain. He could usually be seen in the middle of the action - for example, orienting himself at strategic points in the squatters' camps with Peter Weish, pictured right.
